Television Viewing Round-Up – August 2008

People Watching TV BBC One was the only one of the main terrestrial channels to record a year on year rise in viewing share, of 3.9 percentage points, according to the latest figures for August 2008.

There was a relatively large decline for ITV1, of 2.2 percentage points year on year.


All Viewing

BBC One enjoyed a viewing share increase of 3.9 percentage points, giving it a total share of 24.4%, ahead of all the other main terrestrial channels.

Popular shows on the BBC’s flagship channel during the month included Who Do You Think You Are? (see Boris Johnson’s Who Do You Think You Are? Proves Popular), and cop show New Tricks (see New Tricks Proves To Be A Winner Again).

ITV1’s viewing share was down by 2.2 percentage points year on year in August, leaving its total share at 16.1%.

BBC Two and Five both suffered slight year on year downturns, of 0.6 percentage points and 0.4 percentage points respectively.

BBC Two now has a total viewing share of 7.7%, while Five’s rests at 4.7%.

Channel 4’s viewing share fell 1.9 percentage points in August, to 6.9%, while other channels saw a rise of 0.7 percentage points, giving them a share of 39.5%.


Digital Viewing

In digital homes, BBC One was up by a very healthy 4.5 percentage points year on year, to 23.1%.

BBC Two remained static over the same period, giving it a viewing share of 6.8%.

ITV1 fell 1.7 percentage points to 14.6%, while Channel 4 dipped 1.5 percentage points to 6.3% in digital homes.

Five’s viewing share was down slightly year on year, by 0.2 percentage points, leaving its total at 4.4%.

Other channels were also down, by 1.9 percentage points, to 44.1%.
