Outgoing GMG Chief Says DAB Faces Critical Six Months

Digital Radio John Myers, outgoing chief executive of GMG Radio, has said that the future of DAB radio will be decided over the next six months.

Myers, who yesterday announced that he will be stepping down from his role at GMG next year (see

“Radio is going to become more and more brand led, and there is going to be more consolidation when the time is right.”

He added that Ofcom should use a lighter touch “so radio stations can adapt more quickly without having to go cap in hand to the regulator all the time”.

“We have to find a way through this hugely complicated digital maze. There are so many different conflicting influences, whether [transmitter business] Arqiva, Ofcom, the Department for Culture Media and Sport, the local, regional and national commercial networks, and the BBC,” he added.

“There has to be a rethink about how DAB is going to work. It is a hugely complicated process but I am confident we can find one.

“Commercial radio has spent over £100 million on DAB so far, so there’s a lot of love in the room and desire to make it happen.”
