The Independent has raised its weekday cover price from 80p to £1, making it the UK’s most expensive daily national paper after the Financial Times.
This come just two weeks after The Times put up its cover price by 10p to 80p in a bid to match the cost of the Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and The Independent (see The Times Ups Its Cover Price).
However, The Independent currently has the lowest circulation of all the daily national titles.
Latest ABC figures show that the paper recorded a total circulation of 230,033 in August, down more than 4% year on year (see ABC National Newspaper Round-Up: August 2008).
The move comes after speculation over whether The Independent was considering dropping its cover price altogether.
