News International has revamped its mobile sites for The Sun, The Times and the News of the World.
Thesun.mobi will feature a new facility allowing users to access, rate and send The Sun stories, as well as more graphics.
The site will also have a new focus on interactivity in its news, sports and showbiz sections – the display and banner ad platforms will remain unchanged.
The Sun‘s mobile site, which launched in October 2007, claimed to be the first national newspaper to launch a “mobi” site with content specifically aimed at mobile users.
James Davis, commercial business partner at News International, said: “We’ve seen massive growth across all our mobile sites in the final part of 2008 and although we’re proud of the work to date, we had the opportunity to take The Sun‘s mobile experience to the next level.”
News International is set to relaunch its new mobile sites for The Times and the News of the World before Christmas.
A number of major publishers have extended their mobile offerings in recent weeks, including the Daily Mirror‘s mobile service Mirror Mobile.
Trinity Mirror is planning to roll-out around 13 mobile websites across its national and regional titles.
The publisher’s mobile plans come as all of the national newspaper websites reported an increase in traffic, with four now boasting over 20 million users, in the latest ABCe data release (see Guardian.co.uk breaks 25m mark).
