Metro set to make job cuts

The Metro freesheet paper is set to make around 10 staff redundant and cease using the services of up to 30 casual staff.

The job cuts are expected to affect staff working on its arts and entertainment section MetroLife as well as people in the paper’s regional offices, according to reports.

In October, the national morning title warned that it would be looking to make a number of redundancies in order to streamline the business for what is looking to be a tough 2009.

A Daily Mail & General Trust spokesperson said: “Associated Newspapers can confirm that further redundancies have been announced at Metro as part of the ongoing Associated cost-cutting programme.”

DMGT said it may be forced to make as many as 400 job cuts across its titles, with most expected to be hit in its regional publishing arm, Northcliffe Media.

The owner of the Daily Mail and the London Evening Standard is hoping to cut costs of around £100 million.
