Sky To Offer Social Media Applications Across Its Websites

Sky Online Sky is to launch a range of social media applications across its portfolio of websites, according to a report.

A report in Media Week says that the broadcaster has struck a deal with online technology firm Pluck that will allow the creation of user profiles, blogs, forums, polls, the uploading of video content and deeper levels of participation.

There will also be a new feature called SkyCast, a citizen journalism section letting users upload their own footage of news as it happens.

Maziar Nadjm, community product manager at Sky, told Media Week: “With more than one billion monthly page impressions each month and many millions of unique visitors, the Sky portal needed a social media platform that could support the high-volume needs of our growing network.”

As Sky develops its profiling technology, it is understood that it will be able to offer ad packages based on the new platform.

Guardian.co.uk, The Economist and Reuters have also formed social media partnerships with Pluck.

At the start of the month, Sky unveiled a revamped news website in an attempt to make it a “dynamic, video-rich site for breaking news and information” (see Sky News Relaunches Website).
