The Sun is set to raise its weekday cover price to 30p, up 5p, in London and the south-east region from Monday, following its 0.8% year on year increase in the latest ABC figures.
The paper slashed its cover price from 35p to 20p in the Carlton ITV region, London and the south-east last September but increased its cover price to 25p in London and the south-east in May this year.
Price-cutting tactics were used in an attempt to keep the Sun’s daily circulation above 3 million copies – it initially slipped below this mark in December but has grown its circulation above 3 million since then.
The Sun was one of only two daily newspapers, along with the FT, to avoid a circulation fall in last month’s ABC figures, with a current circulation of almost 3.1 million (see ABC National Newspaper Round-Up: June 2008).
Other regions, except Scotland, pay 35p for the paper on weekdays, with the Saturday edition costing 55p across the country.
66% of the Sun’s circulation was sold at the full cover price of 35p in June, according to reports in the trade press.
