Planet Rock takes digital gold at the radio awards

Planet Rock Logo Planet Rock has won the UK Digital Station of the Year award at this year’s Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards.

In its tenth year of broadcasting, the UK’s classic rock radio station has been awarded its sixth Digital Station of the Year award, and its second award this year after winning at the Freesat Awards 2009.

The digital station broadcasts to classic rock fans, who it claims have never been catered for in radio.

In the latest RAJAR release, Planet Rock’s audience increased by 20% year on year, up to 674,000 weekly listeners, while its share of total UK listeners peaked to 0.40%.

The station went independent just 12 months ago after Malcolm Bluemel acquired it from Global Media.

“This is a fantastic achievement by the Planet Rock team. To get recognition by our peers makes all the hard work put in over the last year justified,” Bluemel said.

“The station is going from strength to strength and we look forward to challenges ahead making this station as big as the music it plays.”
