Overnights: Big Brother 10 kicks off with almost 5m viewers

Big Brother 10 Logo Channel 4’s Big Brother Launch Show attracted a high of almost 5 million viewers last night, securing the peak audience during the all-important evening slot.

Series 10 of C4’s well-known reality show kicked-off with more than 4.7 million average viewers and a 22.1% audience share between 9pm and 10.35pm.

Davina McCall famously introduced this year’s 16 contestants, who have been selected to live in the house under 24-hour surveillance for the coming weeks.

Elsewhere, BBC One’s new Calendar Girls: 10 Years On, which revisited the Women’s Institute ladies who inspired the film, pulled in a respectable 3.4 million peak viewers and a 13.5% average share between 9pm and 10pm.

At the same time, a repeat of ITV1’s long-running Taggart picked up 3.2 million average viewers and a 14.8% share, while Five’s popular crime series, The Mentalist, attracted 2.3 million and a 10.7% share.

BBC Two’s new programme – A World of Pain: Meera Syal on Self-Harm – started off with a high of 1.3 million viewers but slipped down to an average of around 850,000 after the first fifteen minutes.

Earlier on in the evening, BBC One’s flagship soap Eastenders picked up the overall highest ratings with almost 8 million peak viewers and an impressive 41.6% share.
