Overnights: Federer’s victory attracts over 11m viewers

Roger Federer Roger Federer’s record-breaking victory at Wimbledon pulled in an impressive 11 million peak viewers yesterday.

BBC One’s Wimbledon 2009 coverage ended on a high as Federer won his 15th Grand Slam title after beating Andy Roddick in this year’s final.

More than 7.1 million average viewers tuned in to see Federer come through 16-14 in the final set after five gruelling sets against Roddick, securing an impressive 49.1% average share for BBC One between 1.30pm and 5.40pm.

Saturday’s ladies singles final between the Williams sisters created less of stir, picking up just 2.6 million average viewers and a 26.8% audience share during the day.

However, Friday’s Wimbledon action peaked with a high of 9.4 million viewers. Tennis fans watched in disappointment as Andy Murray got knocked out of the competition by Roddick in the second men’s semi-final.

Aside from Wimbledon, the weekend’s television line-up and viewing figures were relatively predictable – the soaps dominated Friday evening with ITV1’s Coronation Street picking up a high of 7.6 million viewers.

Meanwhile, BBC One dominated the ratings on Saturday evening, as usual, with a peak run of Total Wipeout, Casualty, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, BBC News and Flightplan.

However, ITV1 managed to secure the top spot during the all-important 9pm to 10pm peak-hour on Sunday with the penultimate episode of Kingdom, starring Stephen Fry.
