Grand Designs comes up trumps

Channel 4 Logo Channel 4’s Grand Designs pulled in the highest ratings during the all-important peak hour last night, racing ahead of ITV1’s live coverage of the FA Cup Football.

The fifth episode of the popular house-building series with Kevin McCloud pulled in an impressive 4.4 million peak viewers and a 17.6% average audience share, well ahead of the channel’s small 3.8% share during the same slot on Tuesday (see Law & Order:UK premieres with 6.8 million viewers).

Channel 4’s documentary The Real Casino Royale – a story of the 1960s Mayfair casino king John Aspinall – failed to impress viewers and picked up below-average ratings for the broadcaster during the 9pm to 10pm peak slot just two nights ago.

However, Channel 4 had an impressive run last night to make up for it – with Relocation Relocation attracting 2.7 million average viewers between 8pm and 9pm, Grand Design’s triumph between 9pm to 10pm, followed by the new series of Desperate Housewives at 10pm, which pulled in 2.7 million peak viewers and a 12.7% average audience share.

ITV1’s Live FA Cup Football replay between Middlesborough and West Ham only managed to attract 3.2 million average viewers and a 13.6% share, which is a big drop from the broadcaster’s high football ratings last night.

More than 8.3 million peak viewers tuned in to see the Live UEFA Champions League goalless draw between Inter Milan and Manchester United on ITV1 yesterday (see Live UEFA Champions League steals the show).

Meanwhile, BBC One’s Nature’s Great Events pulled in 3.7 million average viewers and a 15.7% average audience share between 9pm and 10pm.

At the same time, BBC Two’s documentary The Rise of the Superchef attracted 1.8 million viewers and a 7.8% share, while the fourth episode of Five’s new Minder with Shane Richie picked up 1.5 million and a 6.5% share.

However, ITV1’s Coronation Street saw the highest ratings of the evening, with 9.3 million peak viewers and an impressive 40.2% average audience share between 7.30pm and 8pm.
