Media Owners In Bids For Lottery
MAI Group, which holds a 61% stake in Meridian, is believed to be planning a joint bid with Ladbrokes to run the National Lottery. An announcement is expected on Monday.
There is wide-spread media interest in the National Lottery because of the fierce competition to televise it. Estimates are that a live draw could attract an audience of 23 million or more, and therefore corresponding ad rates; the top show over Christmas attracted only 20 million.
Granada and Carlton are already members of the Great British Lottery Company a bidding consortium, alongsideAssociated Newspapers and Hambros. Applications have to be in by February 14 and a winner should be announced in the spring.
