Channel 4 New Season
Channel 4’s new Spring season programmes, on which £49m has been spent, brings an alternative to the World Cup Football on ITV and BBC. There is a range of programmes by and for women, from First Sex, a magazine series on women’s issues, to Lynda La Plante examining men’s obsession with guns in Men Only, also featuring Men’s Rooms, examining the male domain in such places as urinals and dressing rooms. Camille Paglia will also return, following the success of the Penis Unsheathed with Lesbians Unclothed.
Channel 4’s contribution to sport will be coverage of the Dominoes World Cup on Easter Sunday. In anticipation of the opening of the Channel Tunnel there is a French Season, with documentaries on English residents in France, French Letters, a documentary which reveals the seedier side of French life and films including Betty Blue, Cyrano de Bergerac and Un Coeur En Hiver.
There will be a Democracy Week in April, as well as other documentary series; Frontline, on current affairs, and Baby It’s You, charting the world from a child’s perspective. The major drama is Little Napoleons, starring Norman Beaton and Saeed Jaffrey as rival solicitors who both become councillors.
For the first time on terrestrial television will be Beavis and Butt-Head, the animated characters from MTV “politically incorrect and proud of it”. Favourites such as Penn & Teller, Eurotrash, Without Walls and The Crystal Maze return with new series, as does Jo Brand.
