Wales On Sunday Rewarded For 18% Increase – Best Sellers

At the Newspaper Society’s Awards for boosting circulation figures, the Wales on Sunday, through a strong increase of 18.4% won The Thomson Regional Newspapers Trophy for Sunday newspapers. The Northampton Chronicle and Echo won the Westminster Press Trophy for evening papers, improving circulation by 5.3%. The Westminster Press Trophy for mornings went to the The Journal in Newcastle for their 1.93% increase.

Among weekly papers, the Crawley Observer boosted figures by 15.4% , winning the Kent Messenger Trophy. The Chester Chronicle and Glamorgan Gazette were also recognised for increases of 5.7% and 5.4% respectively.

However, the worrying overall decline in regional sales was also reflected at the awards; there was no awarding of the Northcliffe Trophy, as no daily newspaper recorded consistent year-on-year growth over the past three years. There were not even any entries for the category of evening papers with a circulation of 80,000.
