Following the recent announcement that BSkyB and BT are offering discount telephone services to satellite television subscribers, an article in today’s FT claims that further links between the two organisations are likely.
BSkyB has been planning a move into digital television; the aim is to use a telephone link to allow viewers to order films of their choice. Such a system would involve broadcasting a few top films on a large number of channels with staggered starts so viewers are never more than 20 minutes from the beginning of the film they choose, a “near-video-on-demand service. This would involve extra business for BT and could be developed to include home shopping services. BSkyB would also like to be involved with programming and marketing of BT launches a national video on demand service in the future.
