Calls For New Media Watchdog
Lord Hollick, managing director of MAI, the broadcasting and financial services group which owns Meridian, has called for the creation of a new watchdog to be responsible for ITV, BBC and other broadcasters. He said the new watchdog should be responsible for standards, complaints and finances.
It is feared that the cross media ownership legislation will have to be postponed due to a backlog of parliamentary issues. National Heritage Ministers believe that the legislation may be delayed until as late as 1996. Such a delay would be a serious blow for Channel 4 in its campaign to alter the rules regarding its payment to ITV, and to any groups such as News International with plans to expand media ownership.
