BT’s Video-On-Demand Plans

BT’s Video-On-Demand Plans

BT is proposing to test its video-on-demand service in up to 250,000 homes next year. The experiment is expected to cost about £75m and would probably be conducted in rural areas.

Viewers would choose a video from a menu on the television screen and have it sent down the telephone wire. This could happen at the same time as a conversation.

If the experiment succeeds BT would go ahead with the investment of several billion pounds needed to create a national system.

The ITC has ruled that BT can offervideo without a special licence. (Newsline 30/9) The Cable TV Association has written to the Department of Trade and Industry to ask it to prevent BT from going ahead. It says that it would be ridiculous for video-on-demand not to be seen as entertainment, and that BT is exploiting a loophole in regulations.
