Industry News

The main news of October, without a doubt, was the award of Britain’s fifth television channel to Channel 5 Broadcasting; the consortium of Pearson, MAI and CLT.

Programming also made the news in October for ITV, with news that they are to introduce a fourth episode of Coronation Street. There was also a row over Cracker when ITV tried to postpone News at Ten; the ITC intervened and ITV had to back down.

October also saw the release of the new Establishment Survey from BARB; this showed an increase in net homes everywhere, and also that the profile of cable and satellite homes had moved more upmarket; 18% of all cable and satellite homes are now ABs. The GfK latest monitor, out in October showed satellite homes grew by 50,000 in September.
