BBC1’s revamped consumer advice programme Watchdog pulled in a healthy audience of 4.6 million viewers last night.

The show,  featuring the return of previous host Anne Robinson, had a peak audience of 4.8 million during the last fifteen minutes of broadcast.

Despite the good ratings for the BBC1 show, ITV1’s soap hour came out on top in the 8pm – 9pm period. The double header of Emmerdale and Coronation Street comfortably won their respective half hour slots, with 6.5 million watching the former and 7.7 million tuning into the latter.

BBC2’s Match of the Day: Live coverage of England’s womens defeat in the European Championship Final attracted an average audience of 1.3 million.

Meanwhile, the start of a repeat run of New Tricks proved to be more popular with the viewers than a new episode of The Bill.  BBC1’s long-running detective show was seen by 5.3 million people, while ITV1’s police drama was seen by 4 million

Elsewhere, the return of US missing persons drama, Without A Trace, picked up 1.1 million average viewers for Channel 4, while Five’s most watched programme was Neighbours with 1.1 million viewers.
