The former BBC director general Greg Dyke is thought to be the latest candidate in the frame for the Channel 4 chairman role.

Dyke, who has previously said that he would be keen to take on one more big job in TV, is currently leading a review of the broadcasting industry that was commissioned by shadow culture secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Dyke also chairs the British Film Institute and Brentford Football Club.

During his four years at the BBC, Dyke helped create Freeview and launched four digital television channels, five digital radio stations and BBC’s interactive television services.

If he took on the Channel 4 chairman role, he would be responsible for choosing a replacement for Andy Duncan, the broadcaster’s current chief executive.

However, reports suggest that Dyke faces competition from Richard Eyre, the former chief executive of ITV and former chairman of GCap Media, who has also been shortlisted for the role along with Lord Alli.

Up to five candidates are expected to take part in the interview process this week, with a final decision likely within the next month.
