Star TV Adds Four Partners
Star TV, Rupert Murdoch’s satellite broadcaster in Asia, has formed a joint venture with four leading entertainment groups – Sony, Warner, Bertelsmann and Thorn EMI – to develop its music channel, Channel V.
The move is the latest attempt to challenge MTV, which broadcast its Asian service on Star until a disagreement in terms recently. Channel V claims to reach 220m people across Asia, India and the Middle East.
The new consortium would give Channel V earlier access to the participants’ material, and allows the station to strengthen its position before MTV relaunches two 24-hour services in Asia in “early 1995.”
The same consortium operates Viva against MTV in Germany.
