58% Play Lottery Every Week

58% Play Lottery Every Week

In a report from the Henley Centre, released today, it has been revealed that 58% of us play the National Lottery every week, and buy at least two tickets each.

The lottery is currently taking £3 billion per year, equivalent to 0.5% of disposable income, or 5% of personal savings. The Lottery has created between ten and twelve new shopping trips each week, and shops with Lottery terminals have seen some sales increase by up to 20%. Those without terminals have actually seen trade fall marginally. However, the Lottery also causes retailers problems; one fifth of customers at Lottery stores avoided the shop on Friday and Saturday, when 70% of tickets are purchased, and some retailers are going so far as to consider pulling out of the Lottery because of the disruption it causes.

The Henley Centre has also profiled a hard core of heavy spenders; These are likely to be:

  • aged between 25 and 34 – (81% play the lottery)
  • earn between £9,500 and £15,500 – (72% play the lottery)
  • live in Scotland – (81% of Scots play)
  • like a flutter, particularly on the horses – (91% also play the Lottery)
  • read a tabloid newspaper – (82% play the Lottery)
  • watch more than 29 hours TV per week

Each quarter the Henley Centre will update and extend their research.
