Murdoch Turns His Attention To Rugby Union Now

In a deal announced this morning, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation is to pay more than £360m over ten years for TV rights to a new Southern hemisphere Rugby Union competition featuring Australia, South Africa and New Zealand in home and away internationals, and leading club sides in a further league tournament.

It is thought that the news may have been broken early in an attempt to keep Rugby Union’s hottest property, New Zealander Jonah Lomu, in the game. He is due to discuss a move to American Football after Saturday’s World Cup Final.

The Northern hemisphere sides are said to be angry about these developments which finally convert rugby union to overt professionalism.
