Mercury Loses Licences

Radio Mercury, broadcasting in the Guildford area has lost its re-application for the AM/FM licences, which have been awarded to a new applicant, Surrey and North East Hampshire Radio Ltd.

The Radio Authority said that Surrey and North East Hampshire Radio better catered for the tastes and interests of people in the area, and had “considerable local support.” Radio Mercury had a weekly reach of 23% in the latest Rajar figures, and a 10.4% share of listening.

The new licences will come into effect on 4 April 1996 for 8 years.
