Tarrant Suggests Tighter Music Policies

Speaking at the RAB Conference this morning, Chris Tarrant, the popular radio and television presenter, suggested that one of the biggest factors accounting for audience growth in Commercial Radio has been the tightening of music policies.

Tarrant believes this policy has led to Capital Radio’s current success. He said that Capital’s “definite, distinctive musical sound” gives the station its own identity where “listeners know exactly what they’re getting.” He also stressed on the need for more interactivity in radio programmes where the use of more than one DJ can lead to greater audience participation.

Chris Tarrant understands the level of interactivity breakfast radio has on the public: “It fits into their regular pattern of the day, including their favourite brand of coffee and the temperature of their bath water…I regularly get asked by listeners when I am taking a holiday, just so they can book the same time.”

A full report on the conference will appear later this week.
