Commercial radio cleans up at the Radio Academy Awards

Commercial radio stations walked away with three of the five stations of year awards and 12 gold awards at last night’s 2010 Sony Radio Academy Awards.

Bauer Media won three awards, while Absolute Radio and GMG Radio both took two gold awards.  talkSPORT, Global Radio and Planet Rock also took home a gold award each.

The event, hosted by Chris Evans at Grosvenor House, also saw prizes for the BBC, which dominated the ‘Breakfast Show of the Year’ category.

BBC Radio 4’sd Today programme claimed the gold award, while Trevor Nelson’s 1Xtra breakfast show was awarded silver, and 5 live Breakfast was given bronze.

Other gold winners include BBC Radio 2’s Dermot O’Leary show for Best Music Programme; BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe for the Best Specialist Music Programme; BBC World Service’s Newshour for Best News & Current Affairs; and BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound for Best Sports Programme.

The BBC also did well with presenters, winning the Music Radio Personality of the Year (Scott Mills), Music Broadcaster of the Year (Zane Lowe) and Best Interview (Jenni Murray).

However, commercial stations took home the Best Entertainment Programme (The Capital Breakfast Show); Best Live Event Coverage (Absolute Blur); Best Use of Branded Content (NME Radio); Best Single Promo (talkSPORT); Digital Station of the Year (Planet Rock); and Station of the Year (Kiss 100).
