TV Overnights: ITV1’s Wormwood Scrubs secures the prime time slot

ITV1’s new fly-on-the-wall documentary series about life in Wormwood Scrubs secured the all-important peak-hour top spot for a second week running.

The second and final episode about life in one of Europe’s biggest prisons pulled in a high of more than 5.2 million viewers and a 21.7% average audience share last night, beating its debut ratings.  Last week, the first episode picked up 5.1 million viewers and a 20.9% share.

BBC One’s second High Street Dreams, with Jo Malone and Nick Leslau, was ITV1’s closest rival with 2.1 million viewers and a 9.5% average audience share.  The three remaining terrestrial channels, meanwhile, all settled on a million-plus ratings between 9pm and 10pm.

Channel 4’s new Time Team Special Nelson’s Hospital just managed to pip BBC Two to third place with 1.7 million viewers and a 7.7% share, while Two’s new Abi Morgan drama Royal Wedding starring Jodie Whittaker and Darren Boyd pulled in 1.6 million viewers and a 7.4% share.

Over on Channel Five, the channel’s popular FlashForward series attracted 1.4 million average viewers and a 6.5% share.

Earlier on in the evening, the Monday night soap line-up dominated the pre-watershed ratings.  BBC One’s Eastenders and ITV1’s Coronation Street both banked an impressive high of more than 8.7 million viewers.
