Southern Newspapers Merges Regions

Southern Newspapers has this afternoon announced a major review of its operating regions, structures and costs which effectively means its Bournemouth-based Central and Southampton-based Eastern publishing regions will merge.

Titles in the new Southern region include the Southern Daily Echo, the Evening Echo Bournemouth, the Southampton Advertiser Series and the Dorset Advertiser Series. The review also results in the loss of between 130 and 200 jobs over two years.

The existing two regional management structures will be replaced by a single team under the control of Stewart Dunn, associate director and regional general manager. This will include Pauline McArdle, regional ad manager and Tony Andrew, regional newspaper sales and marketing manager. Peter Bridge, newspaper sales manager, will be leaving the company as a result of the merger.

A spokesman for the company told Newsline that no newspaper titles would be merged and said the new outfit will probably be based in Southampton.

The initiative follows Southern’s recent major capital investment programme, including the construction of a £35m publishing and print centre at Southampton.
