TV Overnights: BBC One dominates the Saturday ratings

BBC One

BBC One dominated the TV ratings throughout the day on Saturday with its Live Golf coverage, Doctor Who and the last in the series of Over the Rainbow.

The channel held the peak audience share from 6am onwards with the exception of one 45-minute slot during the repeat of Junior Apprentice at 5.15pm, which saw BBC Two’s Golf coverage claim the top spot during a 15-minute window and ITV1’s News & Weather steal the show for 30-minutes.

BBC One’s coverage of the Live PGA Golf Championship, which extended to BBC Two later on in the day, secured 781,000 viewers and a 11.5% average share between 2.15pm and 4.30pm, while Doctor Who attracted a high of more than 4.2 million viewers and a 30.1% share.

The last in the series of Over the Rainbow, meanwhile, saw the three remaining hopefuls perform for the final time in a bid to win the role of Dorothy in the new West End Wizard of Oz production.  The first episode pulled in more than 6.1 million peak viewers and a 34.2% share, while the second results show hit a high of more than 6.6 million viewers and a 30.2% share.

BBC One’s long-running hospital drama Casualty continued to hold a significant ratings share from 9.30pm onwards, with 5.8 million peak viewers and a 27.4% average audience share.

BBC News and Live at the Apollo also held the peak audience share late into the evening.

ITV1 and Channel 4’s attempt to rival BBC One’s Saturday schedule failed to win over viewers.  ITV1’s coverage of the Live UEFA Champions League final with Bayern Munich v Inter Milan kicked-off with just 1.4 million viewers at 7pm, although crept up to a high of 4.2 million towards the end of the game.

At the same time, Channel 4’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring film settled on 1.2 million average viewers and a 6.8% audience share.
