New report finds large decline in UK newspaper circulations

UK newspaper circulation fell 22% between 2007-09, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The OECD report, The Evolution of News and the Internet, reveals that this is the second largest decline of any country apart from the USA, which was down 30%.

About 20 out of 30 OECD countries face declining newspaper readership, said the OECD, with significant decreases in some countries.

It also revealed that British newspapers got about 50% of their revenue from advertising in 2008, lower than the global average of 57%.

Total US newspaper advertising revenue – including print and online – fell 27% in 2009 to $27.6 billion, according to recent figures from the Newspaper Association of America.

The OECD report also revealed that in some OECD countries, more than half of the population read newspapers online (up to 77% in Korea).

The willingness to pay for online news remains low, however.
