TV Overnights: France v Mexico scores a high of 9m viewers

BBC One’s France v Mexico coverage pulled in a high of almost 9 million viewers during last night’s prime time slot.

The Group A match, which ended 2 – 0 to Mexico, attracted more than 6.3 million average viewers and a 29.7% audience share for BBC One between 7pm and 10pm.

The channel’s afternoon game – Greece v Nigeria – also helped BBC One secure the peak audience throughout most of the day.  The 2.45pm match picked up more than 2 million average viewers and a 26.2% audience share.

However, ITV1 did get a look in at some of the action yesterday.   The Argentina v South Korea match banked a high of 2.2 million peak viewers and a 28.5% share between 12.10 and 2.30pm.  Emmerdale also stole the top spot between 7pm and 7.30pm with 5.5 million peak viewers and a 31.6% share.

Later on in the evening, ITV1’s Taggart repeat came second to the football with 2.7 million average viewers and a 11.6% share during the peak-hour.  Channel 4’s Big Brother came next in line, attracting 2.1 million viewers and a 9.3% share during the all-important 9pm to 10pm slot.

BBC Two’s new three part series Gareth Malone Goes to Glyndebourne, meanwhile, picked up 1.8 million viewers and a 7.8% average audience share.  Over on Five, it’s 9pm film Heartbreakers settled on just 877,000 viewers and a 4.7% share.
