ITC Investigates United’s Media Interests

The ITC has said that it will be investigating United News & Media’s various interests in television and national and regional newspapers.

The watchdog will carry out a public interest test to examine the “desirability” of promoting plurality in ownership in the broadcasting and newspaper industries; diversity of sources of information and opinions expressed to the public; and any economic benefits which are the result of United being a newspaper group.

United currently has control of Meridian and Anglia TV, the Express, Express On Sunday, the Daily Star and regional titles including the Barnet Advertiser, the Enfield Advertiser and the Southend Yellow Advertiser.

…United is also strongly tipped to add another media business to its interests in the shape of Westcountry TV which has been on offer since July. Yesterday United made stock market moves to raise £180m, £80m of which is believed to be set aside for a Westcountry bid.
