TV Overnights: BBC One’s World Cup coverage scores the peak-time ratings

BBC One’s Match of the Day Live coverage of the Spain v Portugal game secured the prime time top spot last night with a high of 9.3 million viewers.

Over 6.8 million average viewers tuned in to see Spain book a quarter-final date with Paraguay after beating Portugal 1-0 with a 63rd-minute David Villa goal.  The game banked a 32.1% average audience share for BBC One between 7pm and 10pm.

ITV1’s The Bill was BBC One’s closest competitor during the all-important peak-hour with 2.6 million average viewers and a 11.4% audience share between 9pm and 10pm.

Channel 4’s drama-documentary The Untold Battle of Britain took the third spot with 1.8 million viewers and a 7.7% share, followed by BBC Two’s Tribal Wives, which picked up 1.6 million viewers and a slightly lower 7.1% share.

Over on Five, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation pulled in just over a million average viewers and a 4.6% share during the 9pm to 10pm peak-hour.

Earlier on in the day, ITV1’s World Cup Live Paraguay v Japan match, which saw Paraguay secure a quarter-final place for the first time after a 5-3 penalty win, attracted the peak day-time ratings with a high of 4.3 million viewers and a 24.2% audience share.

BBC One’s Wimbledon coverage, meanwhile, attracted almost 3 million peak viewers and a 16.5% average share between 1.45pm and 6pm.
