Channel 5 Sign Film Deal With Fox
Channel 5 has announced that it has secured a deal with 20th Century Fox International TV for the UK terrestrial premieres of its recent major films releases. The deal will include premieres of such films as Independence Day, Mrs Doubfire, Speed, Hot Shots Part Deux and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
The deal was negotiated jointly with the BBC and will see 68 first run movies being shared between the two terrestrial broadcasters. Of the 68 feature films, 9 will be jointly shared with the BBC, 37 will be exclusively owned by Channel 5 and 22 will be owned by the BBC.
Recently released films that will also be included in the deal are Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, Courage Under Fire, the John Travolta and Christian Slater action film Broken Arrow and the remake of Miracle on 34th Street.
Commenting on the deal Dawn Airey, Director of Programmes at Channel 5 said, “This is a clear signal of Channel 5’s intention to follow every programming opportunity that supports our brand. The commitment is over and above the existing programme budget and our ambition is not constrained by the original financial parameters of the licence application.”
