Tango Ad Draws Complaints

Tango Ad Draws Complaints

The October complaints bulletin from the ITC reports that the Tango Blackcurrent ad, created by Howell Henry Chaldecott Lury & Partners, provoked 63 complaints from viewers who found it xenophobic and violent.

In the ad a Tango spokesman offers to “take on” a French complainant who had criticised the new blackcurrent flavour drink. He dons a boxer’s gown and strides towards a boxing ring. The final shot shows three Harrier Jump jets heading for France. The complaints were not upheld however since the ITC believed the intended humour was at the expense of the over-reaction of the British and most viewers would not find it offensive.

…21 viewers also complained about an ad for Atmosfear, a board game from Spears. The complainants regarded the “horror”-type element of the ad as unsuitable for broadcasting during children’s programmes. The complaints were upheld by the ITC on the grounds of scheduling and it was concluded that the ad should not be shown during children’s programming.
