Sales of Android-based phones have more than quadrupled in the UK during the last quarter, increasing by 350%, according to research from GfK Retail and Technology.

Android’s share of smartphone contract sales in the UK was at 3% in the first three months of 2010, before significantly increasing to 13.2% in the second quarter.

Megan Baldock, an analyst at GfK, said: “The figures suggest an increasing number of consumers are now asking for Android handsets by name.”

“Operating systems are no longer simply a by-product but a key selling point in their own right,” she added.

Smartphones accounted for 67% of all contract sales in the second quarter of the year, which was an increase of over 21% year-on-year. This followed news that smartphone sales increased by 54% in the first quarter.

Overall contract-sales growth, including all mobile phones, barely changed from the first to second quarter, increasing by less than 1%.
