Carlton Reveals New Channel Details
Carlton has revealed details regarding its new cable channel, Carlton Food Network *(Newsline 21/06).
The cable exclusive channel will begin broadcasting on 2 September and will be immediately available in over half of the UK’s 1.4 million cable homes. Broadcasting initially every weekday between midday and 5pm, Carlton Food Network will screen a range of programmes about food and cooking, most of which will be original productions from Carlton. Top chefs Anthony Worrall Thompson and Brian Turner will be hosting their own shows and a food magazine programme including restaurant reviews, new recipes and consumer guides will be screened daily. The channel will use Carlton Studios in Nottingham and a wide variety of outside broadcasts will take viewers to famous chefs’ and celebrities’ kitchens in the UK and overseas.
Carlton Food Network will be run by Janet Goldsmith, the managing director of Carlton Select, and airtime sales will be handled by Carlton Sales. Carlton plans to invest some £5m in the channel over the next three years. Carlton says that there will also be opportunities for sponsorship and merchandising.
Nick Walmsley, chairman of Carlton Television, said: “Our market research has found a clear niche for this channel and cable companies and advertisers have expressed considerable enthusiasm.”
The channel launches a month before Granada starts broadcasting its rival ‘Food and Wine’ service in October *(Newsline 05/06).
