TV Overnights: Sherlock wins peak slot with over 7m viewers

Last night, BBC One’s final episode of Sherlock won the peak slot of 9pm to 10pm, securing over 7 million viewers and a 29.9% share – up on last weeks 6.4 million and 25.6% share.

This was despite competition from ITV1’s The Unforgettable Bob Monkhouse, which attracted 3.3 million viewers, and a 13.5% average share.

BBC Two’s Coast achieved an audience of 2.7 million, and an 11.1% share, while Channel 4’s Big Brother secured over 2 million viewers, and a 8.4% share.

BBC One dominated most of the morning television schedule, with BBC Two briefly taking over from 10.30am to 11.30am, with Something for the Weekend attracting just under 1 million viewers, and gaining a 13.8% share.

ITV1 won top ratings in the afternoon and early evening, with James Bond film Live and Let Die securing 1.8 million viewers and a 14.8% share from 3.50pm to 6.05pm.

On Saturday evening, BBC One’s hospital drama Casualty won the peak slot of 9pm to 10pm, with 4.5 million viewers and a 22.7% share;  slightly down on last week’s 4.9 million viewers and 23.8% share. Earlier on BBC One, Tonight’s the Night aired from 8.20pm to 9.20pm and won the highest ratings, peaking at over 5 million viewers. On average, it secured 4.4 million viewers and a 22.6% share.

On ITV1, 30 Years of An Audience With provided competition, airing from 9.20pm to 10.20pm, with just under 3 million viewers and a 15.1% share.  Magic Numbers, airing from 8.20pm to 9.20pm, attracted 2.7 million viewers and a 14% share.

Elsewhere, BBC Two’s Have I Got a Bit More News For You achieved an audience of just over 2 million, and an average share of 10.2%. Channel Four’s Big Brother secured 1.6 million viewers and a 8% share.

Five’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation managed an audience of 854,000, and a share of 4.3%.

During the daytime, BBC One dominated the top ratings in the morning and afternoon, with a marathon of sports related programming. Rugby League: Challenge Cup aired from 2pm to 5pm, peaking at over 1 million viewers, and was followed by Match of the Day, which secured an average audience of 2.7 million, and an 18.9% share.

ITV1 took over in the early evening, with Funniest Ever You’ve Been Framed showing from 6.35pm to 7.35pm, and managing to attract 3.9 million viewers, and a 23.9% average share.

On Friday night, BBC One won the peak slot, with My Family (9pm to 9.30pm) attracting 4.6 million viewers and a 20.7% share, and The Old Guy (9.30pm to 10pm) securing 3.2 million viewers and a 15.1% share.

ITV1 provided competition with Doc Martin, airing from 9pm to 10pm, which achieved an audience of 3.1 million and a share of 14.3%.

BBC Two’s Home Movie Roadshow attracted 1.8 million viewers and an 8.1% share, while Channel 4’s Big Brother secured 2.4 million viewers and an 11.2% share.

Five’s The Mentalist managed an audience of 1.2 million, and a share of 5.6%.

Earlier in the evening, ITV1 won the 7pm to 8pm slot, with Emmerdale (7pm to 7.30pm) attracting 6.1 million viewers and a 32.9% share, and Coronation Street (7.30pm to 8pm) securing 6.7 million viewers and a 29.4% share. BBC One’s Eastenders, showing from 8pm to 8.30pm, managed an audience of just over 8 million, and a 36.3% share.

BBC One dominated the morning television schedule, with BBC Two and ITV1 taking over in the afternoon as usual.
