July Sees Drop In Cinema Admissions

Cinema admissions in July averaged 2.29m a week – a 5% year-on-year decrease. This is despite Mission Impossible topping the box office with one of the strongest opening weekend records to date (£4.2m) whilst also becoming the fourth highest grossing film of the year. High performing films for July last year included Judge Dredd and First Knight, while Batman Forever was the top grossing film of ’95. This year’s July monthly admissions total was 10.1m, which is a drop of 4.7% from last year’s figure of 10.6m.

Admissions from January to July bring the total for the first seven months of the year to 72 million, a 19% increase on 1995 and a 4% increase on 1994. To reach 1994 levels again, admissions must continue at 2.4 million a week.

Interim estimates for August indicate at least a 20% increase on last year with the release of Independence Day (already top grossing film of the year) and the continuing success of Twister and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
