Channel 5 Retune May Not Be Needed

A new piece of technology developed by Pace Micro Technology could be implemented to solve the problem of having to retune millions of VCRs in order for households to receive Channel 5.

The problem at the moment is that 60% of the population would receive the Channel 5 signal on a frequency which would interfere with video recorders. Channel 5’s solution was to visit individual households and manually alter TV sets. Pace, Europe’s largest manufacturer of satellite receiving equipment, believes that its ‘channel shifter’ will make this unnecessary. Their product is a small plug-in device the size of a computer mouse and will work by ‘shifting’ the Channel 5 signal to another frequency which will not cause interference. Home owners will be able to install it themselves.

Andrew Bone, Pace’s Communications Manager, said that Pace has been discussing the new technology for some months with Channel 5, though Channel 5 has not yet made a decision to buy it.
