RAJAR figures for Q3 2010 saw another stellar performance from commercial radio, which gained half a million new listeners across national and local stations.
In the national market, Global’s Heart Network (UK) has continued to keep pace with its BBC counterparts in what was an all-round positive period for national stations and networks, although the stand-out performances came from BBC 6 Music (again), Absolute Radio Classic Rock and Panjab Radio.
BBC Radio 2 is a non-mover at the top of the breakfast show chart, although both Chris Evans and Moyles lost listeners during Q3 2010. Meanwhile, 95.8 Capital FM’s Johnny Vaughan and Lisa Snowdon continue to reign the London breakfast chart.
It is all change in the capital once again, with Magic reclaiming the top spot after losing out to Heart in Q2. However, 95.8 Capital FM is the real success story in the London market. The Global-owned station is now able to boast a weekly reach of more than 2.1 million listeners for the first time since 2005, which bodes well for the upcoming nationwide roll-out of the Capital brand.
Digital Radio hasn’t missed out on the action either – 20.4 million people now tune in to listen to the radio via a digital receiver each week, while DAB set ownership continues to rise (over a third of the UK population now live in a household with a DAB receiver). Meanwhile, listening to digital radio via other platforms such as mobiles, digital televisions and the internet is also growing in popularity.
