Piccadilly Gold Fined By Radio Authority

The Radio Authority has fined Piccadilly Gold (Manchester) £1,000 for breaching sections 90 (1)(a) and (2) (ii) of the Broadcasting Act 1990 and the Authority’s Programme Code. Both the Act and Code prevent licensees broadcasting any material which offends “… against good taste and decency…” and they also prevent “any abusive treatment of the religious views and beliefs of those belonging to a particular religion or religious denomination.

At a recent meeting, the Authority considered a complaint made about a late night ‘phone-in programme on Piccadilly Gold in which a presenter permitted, and participated in, a live discussion which made offensive remarks about Catholics and the Pope.
