Dish Owners Grow By 77,000
The number of British households with satellite TV dishes grew by 438,000 in 1995 to a total of 3,369,000, according to the latest figures released by GfK Marketing Services. This compares to a growth of 465,000 during 1994.
As usual, December was the strongest month for dish sales, with the market boosted by Christmas. Dish ownership grew in December 1995 by 77,000 – compared with 70,000 in December 1994. During the last three months of 1995 growth was 131,000: this compares to a growth of 168,000 in both 1994 and 1993.
Sales of satellite equipment grew by 28% in 4th quarter 1995, compared with the same period in 1994. The figures revealed a growth from 195,000 in the three months to December 1994 to a total of 248,000 in the same period in 1995.
Several other home entertainment products also showed positive rates of growth but these tended to be smaller. For instance, Christmas sales of large screen TVs grew by 9% (to 526,000), VCRs by 7.3% (to 817,100) and portable audio systems by 2.7% (to 3,455, 600).
