Channel 4 has announced that it has reached an agreement with the British Athletic Federation and British athletes to cover all major athletic events in Britain in a four year deal starting from February 1997.
The new deal replaces the current one between the BAF and ITV which has lasted for 12 years. ITV were said to be unhappy with the non-appearance of top athletes at events that it had been televising over recent years.
Peter Radford, executive chairmain of the British Athletic Federation, said: “Teaming up with Channel 4 will bring the sport a fresh approach with the innovative flair that is the network’s hallmark. Athletics is embarking upon a change of style with fresh presentation and a revamping of the sport’s major properties.”
Further details regarding the on-screen format and what events will be covered will be given at a press conference in January 1997.
