BBC To Set Up 8 New Cable Channels

The BBC has entered into talks with cable companies regarding the creation of eight new cable only channels. The new channels are being planned as part of a joint ventures between the BBC and cable operators Flextech and Discovery.

The channels being considered include:

  • Showcase – which will feature comedy and drama from the BBC archives.
  • Horizons – a factual based channel.
  • Style – a leisure and lifestyle channel.
  • Arena – the best of British culture through daily reviews, special seasons and the full range of BBC music, theatre and arts programming.
  • Learning – a dedicated educational channel
  • Sports Entertainment Network – offering news, exclusive entertainment shows live phone-in and up-to-the-minute comment from the BBC’s team of sports presenters
  • One-TV – a Radio One type television channel.
  • BBC Catch Up – which will give viewers the chance to see recent programmes they have missed.

Phil Johnstone from the BBC Worldwide told MediaTel: “The BBC and the cable companies are still in negotiations. We are talking to Flextech for the UK based channels and Discovery for international ones.”
