Survey Shows Little Change In Amount of TV Violence

Survey Shows Little Change In Amount of TV Violence

A report by Sheffield University has revealed that violent content occupies a relatively tiny percentage of total programming minutage.

The independent report, funded by all main UK broadcasters and regulators, covered ten terrestrial and non-terrestrial channels and recorded 1.08% violent minutage out of across-the-board total TV output. This compares to 1.07% last year. The amount of violence on terrestrial TV at 0.72% was significantly less than on non-terrestrial, whilst ITV was the only terrestrial channel to record a year on year fall.

The definition of violence in the study used was wide, including sporting events like boxing and wrestling, the news, cartoons and the portrayal of the threat of violence.
