Press Speculation On Premiership TV Rights Just Rumours

The Premier League has told MediaTel today that contrary to press reports no decision has yet been reached as to who gains the rights to live premiership football. Bids are being presented today at the Premier League’s headquarters with no decision expected until the weekend at the earliest.

BSkyB is the favourite to carry on with its present coverage of premiership football, this is because Sky have a clause in their existing contract whereby they can match any offer made by a rival bidder. Main contenders for the bidding rights are MAI rumoured to offering between £150m and £200m over the next ten years and a consortium of Mirror Group and Carlton who are said to be offering £1b over five years.

Newsline will have any further details as they break.
