Channel 5 Could Reach More Homes
Channel 5 Broadcasting hopes that an extra 3.7 million people will be able to receive its signal if the government accepts plans that it is proposing. These involve using the channel 35 frequency currently reserved for digital broadcasting to transmit Channel 5 to those viewers who would otherwise suffer interference.
Channel 35 was originally allocated for digital TV transmissions before the Channel 5 licence was re-advertised. Channel 5 believes that development in digital frequency planning since then means that channel 35 will not be needed to extend digital multiplex coverage. This view is shared by the ITC.
C5B has also commissioned the Defence Research Agency to find out whether there are ways of extending its analogue coverage further by using unused transmission frequencies and making more efficient use of others.
At present 70% of the UK will be able to receive Channel 5 and under the new proposals this will increase to 80%, extending service to areas such as Devon, Kent Yorkshire and Worcester.
