ASA Orders Ban On Royal Ad

The Advertising Standards Authority has ordered L!ve TV to withdraw the ad for its “Live Predictions” programme, which featured a wedding photograph of the Prince and Princess of Wales, after a complaint from the Royal Family which found it distasteful; Prince Charles’ head was replaced with that of a grinning Paul Gascoigne which Princess Diana seemed to be kissing. The ad, created by Young & Rubican, was titled “Who knows what the future holds?”

The complaint, reported in the ASA’s February complaints bulletin, was upheld by the ASA. L!ve TV however believed that the approach was humorous and not offensive. While the ASA agreed that this was the case, it reminded L!ve that reference to members of the Royal Family in ads are not normally permitted and advertisers should first consult the Lord Chamberlain’s Office. This was not done and so the ASA concluded that the ad broke the rules and should be withdrawn.

A complaint against the Times Newspapers was also upheld. There were objections to an editorial promotion in the Times announced by a front page flash that stated “Free audiobooks…Choose from ten free titles”. Inside however it was revealed that there was a postage and packing charge of £1.98 for each book. The Authority was concerned that, having already upheld similar complaints against promoters, they were still not using acceptable promotions. The Times was advised to take copy advice in future on front page promotions and to ensure compliance with the Codes.
