Chris Blackhurst, City editor at the London Evening Standard, has replaced Simon Kelner as editor of The Independent.

Kelner, who has edited the Independent for 13 years, will take the title of editor in chief, but will have no responsibility for the day to day running of the paper.

Blackhurst, a former deputy editor of the Independent, was appointed by Evgeny Lebedev, son of the Russian business tycoon Alexander. Staff were emailed on Friday to announce the appointment of Blackhurst, who also worked as a reporter at the paper.

Kelner was appointed as editor in 1998 during which time Blackhurst was deputy editor to Rosie Boycott. Both of them then went on to run the Daily Express.
